Aal-Pa-Tah 237: 2012 Uncut Year Set

Aal-Pa-Tah Lodge 237 is commemorating its 70th anniversary in 2012, with its activity patch set for the year.  At the recent Palm Beach Trade-O-Ree, a complete set of activity patches and the anniversary flap were sold in auction to one impatient collector who could not wait all year to obtain the full set one piece at a time.  Each of the weekend pieces of the year’s activities are one letter of the word “GATOR”, as well as a segment of an alligator.  Once the full set is assembled, the word is spelled and the alligator is complete.  The year patch is the log upon which the gator lays, fitting like a jigsaw puzzle with the feet of the gator.  There will also be an “uncut” set available, with all of the pieces together as one patch.

Echockotee Lodge 2012 Winter Fellowship

Echockotee Lodge 2012 Winter Fellowship

The 2012 Winter Fellowship for Echockotee Lodge 200 was the first weekend of their annual series of activity patch theme, “Camp Shands Structures”.  Camp Shands is where Echockotee has been holding its weekend activities since 1968.  The Winter Fellowship patch depicts the “tree houses”, a coveted site at Shands where campers sleep in small cabins set about 12 feet off the ground.  The name and date of the event have been embedded into the design, in the lower right corner.  Other patches in the series will depict the camp chapel, council ring, climbing tower, a cabin, and the camp water tower.

The irony to this series that the Winter Fellowship may be the last lodge weekend event held at Shands for several months.

Tipisa 326: 2011-2012 Year Patch

As is the custom in Tipisa Lodge (326), the incoming Lodge Chief is responsible for the theme for his year’s patches.  The chief for the 2011-2012 year decided that the lodge needed a renewal of the lodge program, almost a re-birth.  And as a fitting theme for his efforts, the lodge’s activity items for his year have the theme of “A Renaissance Of Brotherhood”, featuring adaptations of artwork from the Renaissance period, with Scouting themes.  the year patch, for example, is an adaptation of “The Birth Of Venus”, by Botticelli.

Echockotee 200: 70th Anniversary Flap

In 2011, Echockotee Lodge 200 commemorated their 70th anniversary with the issuance of a flap (S-45?), 800 made, and sold unrestricted.  The basic design is based on the 25th anniversary flap (S-5), with a fleur-de-lis embedded in each lower corner; embroidered to match the design.  What stands out with this issue is the “70″ in the middle.  It was embroidered over what is known as “foam injection”, to create a three-dimensional effect.

237 Aal-Pa-Tah: 2011 Year Patch

The Aal-Pa-Tah Lodge 237 activity patch set for 2011 utilized older lodge designs for the weekend itemsfor the “year patch” (a J-type activity patch, used by many lodges in Florida as an additional piece in the year’s themed set).  The year patch utilized the “gator on a log”, that was used as the lodge’s basic flap design from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The five weekend patches all have the same basic design, with changes in color and the name of the weekend activity.  This basic design was first used as a weekend patch in 1959, and again in 1988.

As previously reported, the activity patch set theme for Echockotee Lodge 200 for the 2011 year was “Ships Named Florida”.  The year has been completed, with the year’s jacket patch and five weekend pieces (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall Fellowships, and the 2011 Section S-4 Conference), with depictions of the different vessels in the US Navy that has carried the state’s name throughout the years.

O-Shot-Caw 265 2011 Summit Corps (SMY border)

For the two national Order of the Arrow events in the summer of 2011, O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265 issued several items, in some very limited quantities.  Slipping under the radar were two flaps made for the contingent to the 2011 Summit Corps event: GMY border (S-137), and SMY border (S-138).  Reportedly, only 50 were made of each flap.

O-Shot-Caw 265 F33?

In late October, O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265 joined the small number of lodges to issue a patch to raise funds for breast cancer research.  Not just one, but two two-piece sets were created.  Each of the sets features an image of a Seminole woman with early 20th century clothing, with the patchwork details rendered in a photoprinted process.  The flaps each have a PNK felt background.

Only 150 of the ”easy” sets were made (F-32, with a WHT border; X-53a, with WHT button loop).  And then there are fifty of the other set (F-33, with a PNK mylar border; X-53b, with a PNK button loop.)

Seminole (85) 75th anniversary 1936 – 2011

Posted in Florida Lodges,Kiondashama 85,Seminole 85 by Robert Mathis on February 20th, 2011 at 8:39 pm

2011 marks the 75th anniversay of the Order of the Arrow in Gulf Ridge Council (Tampa, FL), for Seminole Lodge 85 and its predecessor, Kiondashama.  Together, this lodge is the oldest in the state of Florida.

To mark the anniversary, Seminole has issued its flap (S-57).   The design depicts the older and more current versions of the lodge totem, the ibis, as well as the a pine tree, presumed to be the totem of the short-lived Kiondashama.  Also to be issued for the anniversary will be a bullion (available in March).

The Anniversary of Our Order

11113282_10101567248822837_2489921023351698603_nOver the last few years a group of dedicated Arrowmen, both youth and adults, have put in countless hours researching and documenting the history of the Order of the Arrow. It has been a challenge: both an irksome task (at times, I am sure) and a weighty responsibility. The early years of the Order have never really been well documented and much has since been lost as the brothers from those earliest years have since gone on to their Great Reward. Given the great challenges they face, this group has done great work.

In the course of this work several historical facts about the history of Scouting and the Order of the Arrow have been uncovered and documented that delve into cultural areas that are difficult to discuss in today's society and would shock some. Others, which not shocking do rattle our notions of what we think we knew. One such area of research, that has been quietly pushed aside, deals with when the Order was found and by whom. The Order of the Arrow as we know it, was actually founded by Carroll A. Edson in the summer of 1914! This year we should be celebrating the 101st anniversary of the Order, not its centennial.

The Fourth Degree

In preparation for this summer's celebration of the Centennial of the Order of the Arrow, the National Committee recently made three significant announcements via webcast on Facebook.

First, due to the recent labor actions in West Coast US ports, the BSA's overseas supplier will only be able to deliver approximately 45% of the red "Centennial sashes" that the OA was having produced for distribution at NOAC. Due to this shortage, an alternative distribution plan had to be devised for the reduced quantity of sashes.

Second, the Order of the Arrow is proud to announce the creation of the Advanced Vigil degree, also to be called the Fourth Degree. This degree will only be conferred at NOAC upon brothers of the Vigil Honor who complete the requirements that will be announced at a later date. There will be separate requirements for youth and adult members. In addition, the youngest member of each lodge's delegation will have the opportunity to complete the Fourth Degree at NOAC. The exact time and location of the Fourth Degree ceremony will be announced at NOAC.

2.5 Weeks and Counting

UPDATE: Home internet service was finally restored on 25 February. Some mail may have been lost, but all is well going forward, at least for now.

Still no home internet service.

Today was the day that Time Warner was supposed to restore my internet. The appointment was made over a week ago. They knew my line was on the ground. They were supposed to call before coming. They never called.

Turns out they did come to the service call. Without ever coming to my house all the technician did is verify that my line is on the ground. After calling customer no service they verified that is all the tech was ever going to do. When will Internet be restored? Customer no service has no idea but tried to assure me they are working hard on it. I was given the standard story about working hard in my neighborhood and big equipment being needed... yadda, yadda, yadda.

Internet Outage Continues

The "Great Time Warner Internet Outage of 2014" continues for me at home, as my cable line is still on the ground in my backyard. Time Warner will not be able to have someone out to my place to restring it until March 22nd.

I'll note the electric company was able to restore access in our part of NC, including the restringing of lines, in a fraction of that time. I look forward to the day when I can "fire" the cable company monopoly!

In the mean time, I am unable to much of any work with this site and can only sporadicallycheck OAImages mail, when I'm able to use someone else's internet connection.

I hope this doesn't impact my ability to continue an annual tradition on this site which is rapidly approaching! Read the Full Post
