A Very Good Day for This Tar Heel!?

This is ACC tournament weekend, an important event for us here in the Southeast. 

UNC squeaked out a last second win over Virginia Tech this afternoon.   Carolina now looks to repeat as the ACC champions.

In the second game Duke (aka “dook” or “Univeristy of New Jersey at Durham”) lost to Clemson.     Clemson will be playing in the ACC championship game for the first time since OA flaps were still a novelty.

SI 2008 Player of the Year

Sports Illustrated has named junior forward Tyler Hansbrough as their 2008 National Player of the Year.  In the article announcing this choice Grant Wahl writes about a photo that Coach Williams keeps on his desk:

On the office desk of his Chapel Hill home, next to the portraits of his wife and children, North Carolina coach Roy Williams keeps a framed 8-by-10 picture of a young man drenched in his own blood.

UNC 103 - Clemson 93 (2OT)

Ty Lawson sat out his second game due to an ankle injury.  It was obvious the team was not the same without him.

Clemson had lost 52 consecutive games in Chapel Hill going into this match up.   A Carolina victory would be a record for the most consecutive home victories against a single opponent.  But it did not start well for the Tar Heels.

dook 89 — UNC 78

Last night was The Game.

Here in central North Carolina college basketball is very popular.   The rivalry between Duke University and UNC is longstanding and intense.  The teams play each other twice a year, once in Chapel Hill and once in Durham.   Currently dook is ranked number 2 nationally, and Carolina is ranked number three.  Adding more intensity to this year’s rivalry is that some games in the first few rounds of the NCAA tournament will be played in Raleigh and Charlotte.  You can all have your Super Bowl and the one Giant loss.   We have the dook-UNC game.
