John asked that I would make an entry about the W1B conclave held at Fire Mountain Scout Reservation in Mt. Vernon, Washington. Note: If you live in Washington and would like to become the Washington editor please contact John and he welcomes the additional help.

The conclave this year was the largest in attendance for a good long while. The program was great and the spirit radiated from arrowman to arrowman. The section auction set a new record in sales. This was due to the increase of participants and the quantity and quality of items being offered for auction.

The conclave had six patches issued for the event. The first was the red border participant Patch. This was given to each arrowman at registration. The next patch was the Uncas Award. This was a black border patch that was given when the participation requirements were met. A white border patch was given to those that donated $50 worth of patches to the auction. The last four inch patch was the silver mylar border that was issue to the COC and certain staff members. A limited number of sets were available at the trading post. The sets had three of the four regular size patches. The white border was held out to encourage donations.

There were two jacket patches issued. The Black border was available to everyone to purchase. The silver mylar was given to those that spent $300 at the auction or purchased one for $300.

The host lodge, Sihks Mox Lamonti 338, issued two flaps for the event. The red border was made available to those in attendance. The red mylar border was highly restricted and only one per host lodge staffer.

By far this was one of the better W1B conclaves I have attended in awhile and I expect next year’s to even be better.

The tank is for the US Army. The USS Alexandria represents the US Navy. A bulldog depicts the US Marine Corps. A fighter plane was used the US Air Force. As far as I know, no patch was issued for the US Coast Guard.

Folks came from four different lodges to attend, with the furthest attendee travelling over 500 miles to Camp Sawyer (Mile Marker 34 oceanside, just north of Big Pine Key). Still, a longer trip than the Cuban refugees that sailed their raft a few weeks ago, to land on the shores of the camp.

Along with the sun, camping, fellowship, and great food, there were, of course, patches. The patch for the weekend depicts a pelican, which is also the unofficial totem of Camp Sawyer. There was a Vigil Breakfast patch; same design as the regular patch, with the word VIGIL stitched into the side.

Onathequa Chapter of Echockotee Lodge 200 sold their own patch, to help pay for the gasoline and the tolls for their 480 mile trip. This is the fourth year in a row that Onathequa created an emblem for their contingent. This year’s design featured the “tourist” owl totem standing at “Mile Marker 0″, the southern end of US Highway 1.*

Even though they appeared the week before at the SR-7B Conclave, I thought I would hold off on a blog post for them until I got to all the other Dixie issues. Roger Ward and Greg Grimes brought these by my home so I could scan them for this site.

The first flap, pictured, is a depiction of “Eswau World”. The design was inspired by the relative proximity of this year’s conclave location to Carowinds.

I was told what their theme was, but don’t remember.

Skyuka lodge was the host lodge for this year’s Dixie fellowship. Like Muscogee and Atta Kulla Kulla (post yet to come), the lodge issued an odd-shape for this year’s Dixie Delegates. However, Skyuka was unique in being the only lodge to issue a leather patch for this year’s conclave.

The design is patterned after the conclave patch issued by the section. Once again, thanks to Brad Hutto and Greg Grimes for sending images and news of this issue.

Scouting was founded in the UK in 1907, so presumably this is one of the last celebratory events.

The Scout Association writes on their website:

“The Queen, Patron of The Scout Association, has today unveiled a bronze of herself, specially commissioned as part of Scouting’s Centenary celebrations.”

The Scout Association then goes on to brag about their membership growth:

“The Queen met with young people undertaking their Street Sports activity badges, this sort of adventure is just one of the reasons for the continuing popularity of the Movement, with 15,000 additional members joining in the last year.

The Scout Association census figures reveal a 3.7 per cent increase in youth membership and a 1.7 per cent increase in adult membership. These figures are the largest increase the Movement has seen for 22 years, and represent the 13,500 young people and 1,500 adults who have joined The Scout Association in the last 12 months.”

Nearly all of the 11 lodges in SR-5 issued patches for the event. This is the first of many blog posts detailing the new issues that appeared.

Santee lodge issued a single flap for this year’s conclave. The Carolina Parakeet, desperately in need of some sunscreen, has taken up building sand castles by moonlight. The flap was issued with a red loop so members could wear the patch without having to sew it onto their uniforms. Thanks to Brad Hutto and Greg Grimes for sending me images of this piece.

Both date from the 1980s. I don’t believe either of these are particularly rare, but for some reason they have just been missed all these years.

The first of these, pictured on the left, is from the 1980 Spring Ordeal. I guess the lodge was eager to put the 1970s behind them!

The second item is from the 1983 Spring Pow Wow. At first some elements of the design might appear oddly placed, but I suspect a reason. Did the designer of the patch attempt to graphically depict something all OA brothers are told in their Ordeal ceremony?

Rather than create fractional numbers for these events items, I have simply added them to the end of each year’s events listings. This is simpler and does not create any significant confusion over the ordering of these items. Listing data for these two items are as follows:
