Atta Kulla Kulla lodge has recently issued its third whippoorwill shaped patch, intended for the lodge’s 2008 LLD.  As in 2006 and 2007 the patch is shaped like the lodge totem, the whippoorwill. The only text on the patch is the year, 2008.

Thanks to Brad Hutto for the image of this piece.

Category IconLodge 270: Recent Chapter Issues

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on March 2nd, 2008 at 12:05 am

270 Cherokee X1?Brad Hutto recently sent me images of three new chapter issues from Skyuka lodge.   There is one each from Cherokee, Union, and York chapters.

The Cherokee Chapter item is the first patch issued by this chapter known to me.   The patch, pictured, is in the shape of a square with the upper right corner rounded off.

Union Chapter has previously issued three arrowheads and two round chapter activity patches.   They break new ground with their first triangular patch.   The classic design features the lodge’s totem on a black background with a white rolled edge border.  BSA is in black above the chapter name.  It is very difficult to see on the image.

270 eX2008-1?This is another of the recent images sent to me by Brad Hutto.   There are several chapter pieces yet to appear online.

Skyuka lodge issued their first activity patch of the year for the 2008 Lodge Banquet.  The patch is shaped like a stereotypical “Indian brave” wearing a single feather.  The design prominently features the lodge’s totem incorporated into a totem pole.

Abbreviations Explained: LB, MTZ, GER

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on February 8th, 2008 at 4:25 am

ponus.jpgThere are many abbreviations used in Blue Book and on this site that may not be readily apparent to collectors, especially those with less experience in this hobby.  Scott Dillard has written an excellent explanation of many of these abbreviations.  However many still do not know what these abbreviations mean.   I thought this would be a good time to explain three of the more obscure abbreviations used: LB, MTZ, and GER.

Once there were three major manufacturers of Order of the Arrow insignia.   While these three companies did not manufacture every OA item, they certainly were dominant forces in this business.   They were responsible for many of the classic issues of our hobby.   Flaps produced by each of these companies had distinctive shapes.   In some cases more than one of these companies produced very similar emblems for the same lodge.   So, an important part of being able to identify some of these older items properly is knowing which company manufactured them.  The three companies were Lion Brothers (LB), The Moritz Embroidery Works (MTZ), and the Geer Company (GER).

An explanation of each of thes three shapes follows.

Category IconLodge 459: 2008 Spring Fellowship

Posted in Catawba 459, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on February 4th, 2008 at 5:20 am

Catawba lodge has adopted a super heroes theme for this year’s activity patches.    The first event of the year, Spring Fellowship, is not until the weekend of March 14th, but I have already been sent an image of the patch that will be issued.  The Spring Fellowship features “Meck” costumed as The Flash.

The fleur d’lis is kind of hard to see in an images, especially if you don’t know where to look. It’s on The Flash’s right boot.   The patch has a “laser cut edge” and was produced by Shelby Patch Company.

Thanks to Larry Banks, I have also been sent images of the rest of the 2008 activity patches for Catawba lodge.   I will post these later.   Blue Book data for the Spring Fellowship patch is as follows:

These 50 States: Oklahoma

Posted in These 50 States by John E. Pannell on January 29th, 2008 at 6:03 am

Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain
And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain…

I thought it was well past time to return to a state that actually had some state shaped patches.  Some of these are classics of the hobby, too.

This is the sixteenth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.

There seems to be an affinity of sorts between lodge Texas and Oklahoma when it comes to OA collecting.   A couple of lodges chose to use the combined shape of the states of Texas and Oklahoma on their patches.   I will mention them here as well as the post for Texas.

Category IconLodge 221: New Standard Flap

Posted in Muscogee 221, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on November 3rd, 2007 at 9:15 am

Muscogee lodge has come out with a new standard flap. The flap features an new artistic rendering of the lodge’s fox totem in what appears to be a Southeastern “low land” forest. The artistic style kind of matches this year’s activity patches and I suspect it is the work of the same artist.

Atta Kulla Kulla lodge has issued a patch intended for their 2007 LLD.   Like in 2006 the patch is shaped like the lodge totem, the whippoorwill.   The only text on the patch is the year, 2007.   This patch was first mentioned in the comments to an earlier post about this lodge’s issues.

Thanks to Brad Hutto for the image of this piece.

Category IconLodge 119: Recent Annual Meeting Patches

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Tomo Chi Chi 119 by John E. Pannell on October 12th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

The activities listings of Tomo Chi-Chi lodge haven’t been updated in a few years.   Presumably this was because of a general lack of information about new issues from this lodge.    I suspected the listings were out of date but neither I nor the SC Blue Book editor had any more recent information.

It amazes me that Scouts today still look to Elvis Presley for patch design ideas.   I can remember when listening to your parents’ music was a “bad thing”.   Perhaps this is evidence of the quality of today’s artists? ;)

Category IconLodge 188: Missing 2006 Dixie Flap

Posted in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on June 8th, 2007 at 12:36 am

I accidentally left the 2006 Dixie flap out of my listings for this lodge.   I’m guessing this should be S53 and have renumbered the 2006 NOAC patches accordingly so as to make room for this flap

(Ed. note.  Post editted on 6/17/07 to add image supplied by Woody Woodruff.  Thanks.)

Category IconLodge 188: 1994 “NCAC” Flap

Posted in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on May 15th, 2007 at 4:00 am

188nc94-ncac.jpgDavid Cody and Jimmy Arthurs tipped me off to this patch from 188.  It is the design of the 1994 NOAC flap from this lodge, where NOAC is misspelled “NCAC”.  They believe it should be listed as an issue.   I’m more skeptical.

They say that a large number of this lodge’s 1994 NOAC flaps were issued with NOAC misspelled “NCAC” and claim to have traded for several of these pieces.   Others were corrected after the fact and show signs of being restitched.   They say they informed the North Carolina Blue Book editor of this piece and he has declined to list it.

Skyuka lodge thought they were sure to score a touchdown with this year’s theme.  I wonder who won the “Skyuka Bowl”.   Like with Santee’s “Vikings”, I can imagine all sort of fun and fellowship - a friendly rivalry -  being had with the “hippies” from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge.

The lodge issued a single flap for this year’s conclave.
