Conclave Season in the Southeast

Posted in Florida Lodges, OAImages News, SR-5 Lodges, SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on April 16th, 2008 at 9:59 am

In recent years OA Sections here in the Southeast generally all hold their conclaves on the third and fourth weekends in April. With Easter falling especially early this year, the schedule has been stretched out. Three sections are especially relevant to the lodges normally covered here.

S-4S, peninsular Florida, held their conclave this past weekend. We should have some updates for the new issues appearing there soon.

Lodge 188: Possible Concord Chapter Items

Posted in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on March 30th, 2008 at 12:05 am

188 Concord eA1989Chris Jensen recently acquired a collection that had several pieces in it that might be of interest to lodge 188 collectors. They might be issues from this lodge’s Concord Chapter. Like a couple of other recent posts here, I throw these out for your comments and discussion.

The first item, pictured at the top of this post, has the strongest claim to being an issue from lodge 188’s Concord Chapter. Even though it does refer to the Concord District Spring Camporee it is conceivable the O.A. Callout was an chapter or lodge run event at this camporee. Beyond referring to an event specific to the Order of the Arrow program, the patch also prominently features an Ordeal sash oddly draped across a backpack.

Lodge 134: 2008 Dixie Issues

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Tsali 134 by John E. Pannell on March 24th, 2008 at 12:06 am

134 S62Tsali lodge has recently issued four new patches for the upcoming 2008 Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave). Thanks again to Hank Birdsong for letting me know about these.

The lodge has chosen a theme based upon the film Transformers for these issues. There are two flaps and two pocket “dangles”. It’s intended that each flap be paired with the same colored pocket patch. The pairs have similar but not identical designs.

ShoppingAds Removed from Site

Observant users of this site will notice the ShoppingAds advertisements disappeared from the site yesterday.  Very observant users may have noticed a previous post that was on the bottom portion of this page promoting this same service had disappeared before that.

I have been experiencing some problems with ShoppingAds since late April.   I believed their accounting of website traffic was inaccurate.  Various reports on their site about my traffic contradicted each other.   Income had been below normal most of the year but really started dropping in April.  May's total was less than half the running average.  So far, May is running at about 15% of what I would normally have expected.  Neither site traffic nor ad impressions have seen a similar drop.

Look Familiar?

Bob White 87 eX1973

Recently I was identifying some patches for a friend and saw some designs that were very familiar to me.  One of these is pictured to the left.  I knew I have seen this design and could remember at least a couple of other examples.   This time there's a simple explanation for this.

Inspired and common patch designs aren't all that unusual.  This is at least the fourth time I have written about patches like this. Previous posts on this topic include:

Lodge 104: New Monochrome Flaps

Occoneechee 104 S72?

Previously I had written about a set of prototypes that were produced during the preparation of four monochrome flaps to be issued by Occoneechee lodge.   Several days ago, the lodge took delivery of the actual order of flaps.    If I understood correctly these will be issued this Fall.   Thanks to Greg Grimes for keeping me up to date on news from this lodge.

Luckily only two sets of the prototype were produced.   The lodge and patch company each retain a set.   There is no history of "extras" of this company's work leaking into the collectorate from east Asian sources.

The patches the lodge will issue are very close to the prototypes produced.   One needs to be very observant in order to tell these apart.    Since the prototypes are not likely to change hands with any frequency, only very few will ever have a need to be able to distinguish between the issued patches and their prototypes.

Lodge 116: 2008 Spring Fellowship

Santee 116 2008 Spring Fellowship

Along with the 2007 activity patches, Brad Hutto recently sent me an image of the 2008 Spring Fellowship patch from Santee lodge.   Santee lodge has had a Winter banquet patch before its Spring Fellowship in recent years.  So, I am presuming this is the lodge's second activity patch for 2008.

The patch design prominently features the lodge's Carolina Parakeet totem.   In addition it features a small representation of the state of South Carolina, a palmetto tree, and crescent moon which are all commonly found on the lodge's flaps.   The patch also commemorates Santee lodge's 70th anniversary.
