Category IconLodge 560: New Beaver Day Patch

560 eX2008-3?Jimmy Arthurs sends word of a new version of his lodge’s Beaver Day patch.  The prior issue had been used for the 2006 and 2007 Beaver Days.  The new version will first be used this year.

The design is identical to the patch I have labeled eX2006-4.   The only significant difference is a change in the border color from purple to black.  This patch is undated like the version released in 2006 and presumably will be used for more than one year.

Category IconLodge 560: 2006 Dixie Fellowship Neckerchief

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on December 8th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

I previously posted here the neckerchief made by a member of this lodge for the 2007 Dixie fellowship.   There was also a privately made neckerchief for the 2006 Dixie fellowship.  Thanks to David Cody and Jimmy Arthurs for filling me on on this.

There is a perpetual argument among some collectors over whether private issues should be listed in catalogues.     Some feel that listing such material legitimizes it in some way and fuels the demand for these pieces.   This argument seems to appear most frequently regarding private issues.

Category IconLodge 560: A Bevy of Neckerchiefs

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on December 2nd, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Eswau Huppeday lodge, prior to 2006, had a custom of issuing a neckerchief for the lodge’s section conclave delegation. They were usually made available on a one per person basis so they were rarely traded or sold. For various and sundry reasons these have not been that well documented and some have probably been forgotten about over the years. They have never been listed in Blue Book. Some have probably just been forgotten about.

There are also a few unlisted lodge NOAC delegate neckerchiefs that have similarly escaped Blue Book listing in the past.

Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs and David Cody for filling me in on these pieces.

Eswau Huppeday Week” continues here at OAImages.

Here’s a tough question for those who try to classify Order of the Arrow patches. If a council produces, awards and sells a councilstrip without any direct involvement from the council’s lodge, but includes the lodge number in the design, should this be listed in Blue Book and this site with the lodge’s issues?

Eswau Huppeday lodge adopted a Batman theme for their current program year.   The theme figures prominently on their lodge event patches as well as the flap issued for this year’s Dixie Fellowship.   In keeping with this theme, six different neckechiefs were made for the Dixie Fellowship.   Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs and David Cody for tipping me off about these.

There is some question whether these items should be listed in Blue Book.   None of the neckerchiefs have anything on them indicating they are from Eswau Huppeday lodge, the Order of the Arrow, or even the BSA.  They are handmade, cut from cloth bought in a store and then hemmed.   Theoretically, if one could find the same cloth and knew the size of the neckerchiefs more of these could easily be made.   I am told all six were made in low quantities, ranging from about 10 to 30 each.

Jimmy Arthurs sent me images last night of a bunch of recent activities patches from Eswau Huppeday.   Among them were the 2007 activites patches from this lodge.  Thanks.

The lodge issued the customary participant and staff patch from the Carolinas Indian Seminar as well as patches for their Spring Fellowship, Fall Fellowship and Winter Banquet.

Category IconLodge 188: 1994 “NCAC” Flap

Posted in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on May 15th, 2007 at 4:00 am

188nc94-ncac.jpgDavid Cody and Jimmy Arthurs tipped me off to this patch from 188.  It is the design of the 1994 NOAC flap from this lodge, where NOAC is misspelled “NCAC”.  They believe it should be listed as an issue.   I’m more skeptical.

They say that a large number of this lodge’s 1994 NOAC flaps were issued with NOAC misspelled “NCAC” and claim to have traded for several of these pieces.   Others were corrected after the fact and show signs of being restitched.   They say they informed the North Carolina Blue Book editor of this piece and he has declined to list it.

Category IconLodge 188: Recent Odd-Shapes Untangled

I recently wrote about Itibapishe Iti Hollo’s recent Dixie Fellowship issues.   In that post, I had said I was uncertain of the number of one of the pieces because I was confused about recent NOAC issues from this lodge.   I thought I knew the flaps well, but the odd-shaped patches left me confused.

Jimmy Arthurs and David Cody were able to dispel my confusion and supply images of most of the recent issues.  Thanks, guys.

Unali’yi 236 lodge issued two flaps in 2006 for the 75th anniversary of their council’s camp, Camp Ho Non Wah.  Except for the twill color, both flaps have the same design.

Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for tipping me off on these.

560bro04Courtesy of Jimmy Arthurs, here’s another North Carolina issue that was missed in the most recent Blue Book.   It’s not surprising this was omitted.

This patch was earned by lodge brothers in 2004 and 2005 who completed a lengthy set of requirements.  Only about 2 dozen were earned.  For those diehard collectors of this lodge’s patches, this will be one of the tougher modern issues to acquire. Continue Reading »
