Winter In Burlington

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on February 15th, 2008 at 4:52 am

picture-060.jpgI’m waiting on news and images of some rumored new issues, namely forthcoming flaps from Occoneechee, and some activities patches from Eswau Huppeday. I also haven’t had the time to finish some posts on state shaped patches.

So, after seeing the news of the dreadful cold weather around the country this past week, I was going post some pictures of the first signs of Spring here in central North Carolina. However we, too, had an unexpected appointment with Mr. Winter.   Yes, we do get snow here in central North Carolina.

Long time readers of this blog might remember back to last Spring when I built this small pond, here surrounded by snow and frozen over.

(More pictures follow.)

265-2008-winter-ordeal.jpg  The new year means a new annual theme for the patches made for O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265’s weekend events: “Rock Concert Posters”.  The first was their Winter Ordeal, held January 11-13. Continue Reading »

Category IconWauna La-Mon’Tay 442, 2003 Activity Issue

Posted in Oregon Lodges, Wauna La-Mon'Tay 442 by skyloo442 on January 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

scan0021.jpgIn 2003 we issued only one activity patch for the year.  We did not produce one for the NAACS (Winter Fellowship) and the LDC in the Fall.

For the backdrop of this patch we used the retiring MGM Indian design.  The MGM indian is protrayed as smoke rising from the fire (The Spirit of Camping).  A relatively simple design that turned out to be a very nice patch.  There are still a few of these in my dupe stock and seem to trade well overall.

This is one of the only years that we only did a single activity patch.  In preceding years we produced 3 or 4 patches for the same event.  That is why it may appear difficult to the 442 collector to acquire a patch for this event.  Don’t worry — I assure you that if you need this patch I can hook you up.

Next blog will be for the year 2002.

Category IconLodge 188: Missing 2006 Dixie Flap

Posted in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on June 8th, 2007 at 12:36 am

I accidentally left the 2006 Dixie flap out of my listings for this lodge.   I’m guessing this should be S53 and have renumbered the 2006 NOAC patches accordingly so as to make room for this flap

(Ed. note.  Post editted on 6/17/07 to add image supplied by Woody Woodruff.  Thanks.)

Category IconLodge 116: The Last 2006 NOAC Flap?

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Santee 116 by John E. Pannell on March 26th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Just when you thought there would be no more patches issued for last Summer’s NOAC, along comes Santee 116 with their first ever NOAC flap.   Thanks to Jason Spangler for the information and scan.

Jason reports this flap didn’t arrive until after NOAC.  The lodge had these and wanted to release them at the 2006 Fall Fellowship, but they could not decide how to distribute them.  Once a decision was made, the lodge released these at their banquet in January 2007.

This is both a followup to a previous post on this issue as well as a request for more information about a specific patch.

By way of submitting pricing data to my site, I received the following note from John Purvis of Wahissa lodge: Continue Reading »

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting a year end round up of lodge events issues for this past year. For some lodges I have no information, so unless someone tells me what event patches their lodge has made this past year the update will be very short.

As far as I know, Itibapishe Iti Hollo issued no events patches this past year.   In fact, I know of none issued by this lodge since 1998.   If you know of any, please send data and scans of them to me.

Category IconTsali Team Dance Champion Flaps Arrived

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Tsali 134 by John E. Pannell on November 29th, 2006 at 12:23 am

Hank Birdsong of Tsali 134 wrote the following message as a comment to a previous message about these flaps:

The 2006 Dance Team Championship patches have arrived! Most will go out on the 28th & 29th of November. With each mail-order we are including a Tsali Lodge Pocketflap Guide & checklist. More Tsali Pocketflap guides will be available at the Wahissa TOR on December 16th, and the second edition with more Tsali Issues will be available at Dixie (free!!). Tsali flaps are about the most difficult to distinguish between issues (I was in the lodge for more than a year before I had a clue!), but this guide should clear up the mystery.

Those who have ordered this flap should see it in their mailbox soon.

from “The Sound of Music” by Rodgers and Hammerstein

I wanted to take a few minutes to share with folks what I think are a few of my favorite flaps. In an effort to cover more of the history of patches, I picked three from different eras: a classic from the 1960s, one from the early 1970s showing the development of highly colorful patches, and a third that first appeared about 7 years ago.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Not all patch designs are original. Sometimes a lodge will base a patch design on an earlier issued patch. While this is commonly done within a lodge, it should be no secret that some lodges are inspired by the work of other lodges.
