Category IconLodge 270: Recent Chapter Issues

270 Cherokee X1?Brad Hutto recently sent me images of three new chapter issues from Skyuka lodge.   There is one each from Cherokee, Union, and York chapters.

The Cherokee Chapter item is the first patch issued by this chapter known to me.   The patch, pictured, is in the shape of a square with the upper right corner rounded off.

Union Chapter has previously issued three arrowheads and two round chapter activity patches.   They break new ground with their first triangular patch.   The classic design features the lodge’s totem on a black background with a white rolled edge border.  BSA is in black above the chapter name.  It is very difficult to see on the image.

270 eX2008-1?This is another of the recent images sent to me by Brad Hutto.   There are several chapter pieces yet to appear online.

Skyuka lodge issued their first activity patch of the year for the 2008 Lodge Banquet.  The patch is shaped like a stereotypical “Indian brave” wearing a single feather.  The design prominently features the lodge’s totem incorporated into a totem pole.

Category IconLodge 270: 2007 Events Patches

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on February 26th, 2008 at 12:05 am

270 eA2007-4?A couple of weeks ago Brad Hutto sent me a number of images of new issues from Skyuka 270.  The first of these are the rest of the 2007 activities patches for this lodge.

Skyuka produced two different patches for their 2007 Banquet.  The first version with a blue sun was already on this site as eA2007-1.  The second version has a yellow sun and I have numbered it eA2007-2, renumbering the Spring Fellowship and pre-Dixie patches accordingly.

There are also new patches for the 2007 Ordeal and Fall Fellowship.  All these patches follow the same general design of an American Indian shooting an arrow into the sky, with a mountainous background.   The colors of the mountains reflect the season in which each event was held.

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on December 14th, 2007 at 7:15 am

Skyuka lodge holds an even in the Spring before their section conclave called the “Pre-Dixie Fellowship”. As I understand it, one of the purposes of this event is to get lodge brothers excited for the upcoming section conclave, the Dixie Fellowship.

The design follows a similar scheme as the previous two events patches for this year.

Blue Book data are as follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
eA2007-3? WHT C M/C RED YEL fdl; Pre-Dixie 2007

Thanks to Brad Hutto for supplying the image and news of this patch.

Category IconLodge 270: New OBV Set

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on October 30th, 2007 at 6:20 am

Skyuka lodge has recently issued new OBV set of flaps, using their traditional double headed thunderbird design. What happened with the prohibition regarding such flaps? Has the prohibition been repealed or modified, or is Skyuka lodge ignoring it?

Thanks to Jeff Cook and Richard Cash for passing these images along to me.

Category IconLodge 270: Unlisted 1985 Event Patch

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on October 23rd, 2007 at 3:15 am

Skyuka lodge went through a period during the 1970s and 1980s where their Spring and Fall activity patches shared the same design.   Some of these events name both patches on each event, with the only distinguishing difference being the border color.  Unless one was familiar with the lodge’s issue (or carefully read this site) there would be no way of knowing which patch was for which event.

Certainly this has confused folks over the years.   Some may have even erroneously thought that either patch was for both events.   Given that there has been less than perfect editing of the South Carolina lodges in the past, it is not at all unreasonable that an event patch might be missed under these circumstances.   This is one such missed patch.

I guess this is a case of “better late than never”…

Thanks again to Jeff Cook for this image of the 2007 Spring Fellowship patch from Skyuka lodge. There seems to be some cross pollination of ideas amongst the lodges of the Palmetto State. ;)  Like Muscogee lodge, Skyuka is using a seasonal theme for this year’s event patches. This time around the archer is pictured in a springtime landscape. The lodge’s totem, the double headed thunderbird is pictured on the bottom part of the patch.

Category IconLodge 270: 1973 Union Chapter Patch

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on September 8th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Brad Hutto also sent this to me last week.   Even though it says “Union District” it is believed that this is was issued by Union chapter for the district’s Spring camporee.  The inclusion of the “WWW” in the design would lead us towards believing this is a lodge or chapter issue, but in my opinion is not conclusive proof.

Can any South Carolina collectors out there challenge or confirm Brad’s assertion?   What do you all think about this?

Category IconLodge 270: Possible Early Leather Neckerchief Slide

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on September 2nd, 2007 at 11:06 pm

This was with the group of images Brad Hutto sent me a few days ago.  It’s an early hand-painted leather that he says has been in a box since the 1970s.  He adds that it was probably used as a neckerchief slide.  The design is the lodge’s totem, the double headed thunderbird, painted onto leather.

If this really was a neckechief slide, I am not certain if it should be listed in Blue Book.  After all, a slide is not a patch.   However there is precedent in Blue Book for listing these types of items.    Two lodges spring immediately to mind as examples:  Shawnee 51 (L4 through L4.97) and Ne-Pa-Win 161 (eL1950, the only known official issue of the lodge).   In the latter example the slide holds a unique historical position as the only known legitimate picece issued by the lodge.

Category IconLodge 270: New Spartan Chapter Patch

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on August 5th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

Janelle Jensen listed a Spartan Chapter piece from Skyuka lodge on eBay recently.   It is not yet in Blue Book.   As far as I know it’s a new issue.

The patch is in the shape of the state of South Carolina.  Both the double-headed thunderbird and a palmetto tree figure prominently into the design.

Skyuka lodge thought they were sure to score a touchdown with this year’s theme.  I wonder who won the “Skyuka Bowl”.   Like with Santee’s “Vikings”, I can imagine all sort of fun and fellowship - a friendly rivalry -  being had with the “hippies” from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge.

The lodge issued a single flap for this year’s conclave.

Category IconLodge 270: 2006 and 2007 Events Issues

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on March 9th, 2007 at 3:59 am

Thanks to Brad Hutto for sending me several images of recent event patches from Skyuka 270.

Three of these are 2006 events issues not previously mentioned here.   They were issued for the lodge’s Pre-Dixie Fellowship, Summer Ordeal, and Fall Fellowship.   As with the first two events patches for 2006, these are designed to be worn around the 2006 arrowman patch, to be listed as R2.

The fourth patch, pictured to the left, was issued for the lodge’s 2007 Banquet.

Blue Book information for these is below.
